How I can help

All people at some stage in their lives will encounter a period of time where they will face crisis, whether it be emotional or physical and it is at times like this that Womens Counselling Australia can assist with counselling.

All people deal with problems in their own unique way, some people are able to resolve their problems by thinking things through on their own, while other people may find talking to a family member or friend beneficial in helping resolve their problems.

However, many people do not have these support networks to talk things over with or who simply prefer to talk to a counsellor rather than disclose personal issues to friends or family. I am that person who you can trust and open up to to explore any issue that you are finding you need help with.

How Counselling Works

Counselling will assist a person to overcome trauma in their life by exploring with the client their present situation and how they would like to change, it’s often a journey of self-discovery for the client. Counselling is not however advice giving, a counsellors role is not to give advice or to ‘fix the problem’.

A counsellor assists you to identify stressors in your life and assists you to explore these problems and identify strategies to overcome stressful or traumatic periods in your life. A counsellor can empower a client, which enables them to discover their own solutions rather than be dependent on someone else’s advice.

You, as my client, will experience many feelings throughout your counselling sessions and it is important to release these feelings and explore these feelings with me.

My Goal

My goal at Womens Counselling Australia is to work alongside you and to assist you to work through your problems and discover solutions, helping you to change your thinking and/or behaviours which in turn will empower you to reach your goals.

What is the usual frequency and duration of counselling?

This is a hard question to answer, as everyone is unique and it varies with each individual. Some factors that may influence the frequency of counselling sessions include your personal history, presenting issues, available supports outside the counselling session, your degree of change desired and what you are able to afford.

Some issues can be ‘worked through’ quite quickly, as they may not be as complex as other issues, therefore you may only need one or two sessions. For more complex issues a longer period of counselling may be required and this may be weekly or fortnightly appointments, which will be discussed at your initial visit.
